The International Association of Lions Clubs began as the dream of Chicago businessman, Melvin Jones. He believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons from purely professional concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world at large.
Jones' own group, the Business Circle of Chicago, agreed and after contacting similar groups around the country, an organizational meeting was held on June 7, 1917, at the LaSalle Hotel in Chicago. A national convention of the "Association of Lions Clubs" was held in Dallas in October of that year, approving a constitution, by-laws, objects and code of ethics.
In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions at their annual International Convention challenging them to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." Since that time, service to the blind and visually impaired has become on of the association's most significant activities. That crusade has resulted in the establishment of International SightFirst, in 1990, an aggressive global blindness prevention program.
Forty million people are blind, yet 80 percent of all blindness is preventable or reversible. International Sightfirst is an unprecedented program which joins leading blindness experts, blindness prevention organization, governments and Lions in an effort to establish long-term solutions in eliminating blindness. |

We Serve Since 1917, Lions Clubs have served the world's population through hard work and commitment to make a difference in the lives of people everywhere. With over 1.4 million members serving in more than 44,500 clubs in over 180 countries and areas, Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service organization. Lions are recognized worldwide for their service to the visually and hearing impaired. The majority of the world's eye banks are established and supported by Lions, as are hundreds of clinics, hospitals and eye research facilities. In their local communities, Lions provide free, quality eye care, eyeglasses and optical aids. But the Lions are not limited to those activities. Visit other areas of our website to see what other activities the Gagewood Lions are involved in. Eyeglass Collection
The Gagewood Lions along with all other Lions Clubs worldwide collect eyeglasses to be redistributed to people who otherwise can’t afford eyeglasses. If you have eyeglasses that you no longer need please consider donating them. The Gagewood Lions main drop box is a converted mail box. The location is outside the Senior Center Building at the Warren Township Center on the corner of Washington Street and Almond Road in Gurnee. |
